Love ’em. Hate ’em.

Love ‘em. Hate ‘em. Make ‘em. Avoid ‘em. Set ‘em. Forget ‘em.

Goals.

catsmiley.com quote

In spite of the love-hate relationship we have shared over the last 33 years or more, I still get wooed by the promise of possibilities they offer me. Somewhere around age 30, I gave up on them all together and determined to never make another New Year’s Resolution, goal weight, or any other goal that may not be attainable. Over time, though, I found myself reevaluating that decision and adding baby step goals to my life. I am a planner, so no plan was really not ever an option.

DECIDE WHAT YOU WANT. MAKE A PLAN AND WORK THAT PLAN. EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.

What is a baby step goal? It is simply the smaller steps you take to reach your ultimate big goal.

Big Goal: I want to pay off my credit cards

Baby Step Goals: Create a budget, create a payment plan to pay off smallest balance and once paid off, apply that payment to the next biggest balance and so on until I have paid off all my credit cards.

Big Goal: I want to run a 5k

Baby Step Goals: Join a running group, run 1 minute at a time and increase intervals until I can run a sustained mile, sign up for local 5K, etc.

Big Goal: I want to lose weight (ultimate # determined)

Baby Step Goals: Lose 1-2 pounds per week, drink 100 oz. of water per day, adopt an eating plan that fits my lifestyle and that I can make work in my home, increase my calorie burn by adding 2-3 30 minute workouts per week, find accountability.

you decide every moment of every day

Accountability is so important for me. Saying it out loud, checking in, keeping a record or log of my progress helps keep me on track and keep me moving toward my Big Goal. As I accomplish each Baby Step Goal, I am motivated to keep moving toward my Big Goal.

It is also important for me to remember that my goals should always be determined by how those goals will best help me to Pursue Myself. My friends have amazing and inspiring goals that they share with me all the time. Being inspired and challenged by those around me is great! Keeping an open mind to new challenges is a vital part of Pursuing Myself. I want to share my goals and inspire those around me, but only in such a way that allows each person to determine what their best Baby Step Goals would be to Pursue their best self.

What would be on your list of Baby Goals to get to your Big Goal as you Pursue Yourself? Tell us about it in the PY Community, our Facebook group.

That’s great, Sally! How will you divide those miles over the week? Do they fit in your schedule now? Or do you have to make room for your weekly rides? Let us know how it’s going, and how you’re making it happen!
